An innovative foil-based marine diverter for smart and efficient source towing.

Conventional paravanes used for air source geometry separation are large, typically in the 1000-2000 kg range with a foil area of 5-10 m2. They are required to provide enough lateral lift to separate all subarrays on one side of a seismic vessel via interconnecting taglines between the paravane and each adjacent subarray. The handling equipment for these paravanes includes launch and recovery davits, tow winches, and overboarding sheaves, all requiring high load certifications.  These traditional methods also produce a lot of drag and in-water noise.

We have developed innovative hydrofoil technology called SailWing which, whenpaired with ION’s active control actuators, provides a much more efficient and quieter method for separation and control.Each SailWing operates close to the center line of the vessel so that faster tows and reduced turn times can be achieved – significantly reducing operational cost and time. 

Product Architecture

SailWing consists of a series of foils over ropes strung between the head float and the first gun station or bell housing. The foil sizes and number of foils are easily configurable to accommodate a wide variety of survey requirements. An actuator is mounted in the head float and is controlled from the vessel. The actuator receives power and communication through the gun umbilical.

SailWing Sea Trials

ION has completed 3 recent sea trials with the SailWing system. The sea trials were conducted using various real-world gun configurations with guns firing.

SailWing was able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to maintain desired array separation to contract specifications while maintaining gun positioning
  • The reduction of turn time by 50-66% while maintaining all separations to contract specifications during the turn
  • The ability to recover any single sub-array without the need to bring the whole array onboard
  • The ability to recover any single sub-array in sea conditions that would not have been possible with conventional systems
