Velocity Model Building
Velocity modeling is a key part of most imaging projects, especially those in which seismic data will be migrated into the depth domain (PreSDM). ION is a leader in complex velocity model building and analysis.
Proven Suite of Modeling Tools
Our experience with seismic data spans all major acquisition domains: narrow azimuth marine, wide/complex azimuth marine, land, transition zone, and full-wave data. ION has developed a proven suite of pre-stack velocity analysis and model-building tools that can be combined as needed to obtain the best possible velocity model for each project.
Our approach combines a general topological engine for arbitrary layered or non-layered model representation with a set of tools to analyze gathers and stacks for defining interval velocity. We build an initial velocity model using such data as RMS stacking velocities, picked horizons, interval velocities, vertical compaction gradients, well logs, and anisotropy parameters. The first iteration of pre-stack depth migration uses this initial velocity model to obtain depth migrated gathers or stacks for further iterative velocity analysis and model building. Our methods of velocity estimation include auto picking, tomography, gather-flattening techniques, and scans on velocity-perturbed stacks. We combine these approaches as needed to obtain an optimal velocity model. For multiple 2D lines, the flexible algorithm also enables the construction of project-consistent velocity models.
