GrandSPAN is a new 2D multi-client seismic program that will tie existing ION BasinSPAN programs in the area and provide a continuous regional seismic dataset in excess of 20,000 km across offshore northeast Canada. A primary objective is to provide a calibrated regional correlation across multiple sub-basins for upcoming license rounds.

The first phase of GrandSPAN will consist of approximately 10,000 km of data designed to tie with the existing ION LabradorSPAN, with a second phase of approximately 5000 km to the south planned for acquisition in 2019 to tie to the offshore Nova Scotia program NovaSPAN.


With proven producing basins in the region such as Jeanne D’arc, Flemish Pass and Scotian, in addition to under explored proven basins, northeast Canada presents an attractive scenario to near field explorers in a low cost environment, utilizing existing infrastructure and technology present in the area. 


GrandSPAN will provide a margin-wide framework to understand the structural and stratigraphic evolution of northeastern Canada. Designed to image deep crustal features, the survey will be depth migrated to 50km and tie at least 40 key wells to provide a calibrated margin-wide stratigraphic correlation that ties current producing discoveries (e.g. Hibernia, White Rose, Terranova Bjarni, Snorri etc) for calibration with new exploration ideas.

Initial deliverables will be available in Q3, in time for 2018 license rounds.

Key components

  • Acquisition start is planned for July 2018
  • Fast track data will be available over the priority lease sale areas from August throughout September 2018.
  • All remaining lines to be delivered as Fast Track PSTM by mid-December 2018
  • Evaluate the geological differences between the producing and non-producing areas.
  • Ultimately tie across the entire margin from Nova Scotia to Labrador
