GulfSPAN

In 2002, ION began acquisition of GulfSPAN, the first of its kind in the extensive and continually expanding BasinSPANS data library. Since its inception, the program has spread over several phases and data additions across the basin and includes streamer, land and OBC data.

GulfSPAN was planned with the specific goal to better understand the regional geology and the deeper, less explored areas of the basin. Particular attention was paid to positioning each survey line to allow ties to key developments, to traverse key depositions and structural provinces, and to image deep structure stratigraphy. The entire dataset was recently reprocessed by ION using Reverse Time Migration (RTM) and included a complete rebuilding of the velocity models and interpretation.

A critical addition to the GulfSPAN program was the grid of composite strike and dip lines using carefully selected legacy data from Seismic Exchange, Inc. (SEI) and Geophysical Pursuit, Inc. (GPI). This regional onshore addition crosses five states with a consistent, depth imaged dataset to tie onshore fields to offshore regions, map key shelf edges, and show the structural setting of the onshore basins.

Understanding Key Deep Water Trend Discoveries

Key discoveries (Great White, Trident, Tiber, Jack) can now be related to new finds, emerging plays, and dry holes across the entire basin. The onshore to deep water interpretation allows the generation of a series of maps revealing exploration targets and major fairways. These maps help exploration teams to create better strategies for the long term and to remain current with new information.

Expanded and Improved Onshore Grid

The reprocessed legacy data is composited into a series of basin-wide strike and dip lines that show the structural setting of the onshore basins, including the Maverick, East Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi Salt basins. These lines allow an enhanced correlation for geologic formations and deep features across state boundaries. Regional basins and arches are interpreted at the Base Louann which represents the Mid-Jurassic unconformity or top of the continental crust. Strike lines that transect several states give an insightful view of depositional fairways and expanding wedges that fill the basin accommodation space.

Key findings include an enhanced understanding of the relationship of onshore plays like the successful Eagle Ford play to the emerging Tuscaloosa Marine Shale play.  Sweet spots for emerging plays can be better delineated.
