Offshore West Africa has been of great interest to many E&P companies around the world. More and more, these companies want to improve their understanding of the petroleum systems and increase future exploration potential. In response to customer demand, GX Technology designed CongoSPAN.
CongoSPAN consists of two phases totaling over 25,000 kilometers of data acquired off the coasts of Angola, Congo, and Gabon. This regional 2D seismic and potential field study provides a dip and strike structural grid related to the major features of the Aptian Salt Basin. The high-end acquisition parameters and industry-leading imaging delivers an unprecedented image quality at deep targets in this area. Results from various licensing rounds and direct block rewards indicate the extensive body of work done in this margin using the CongoSPAN dataset which successfully revitalized hydrocarbon exploration in the South Atlantic/West Africa margin.
The program layout was designed with the active participation of oil & gas companies and regional experts, with the goal of better understanding the regional geology and more specifically, the deeper, less explored basins in the region.
Key program components include:
- Acquisition using long offsets and long record lengths
- Provides understanding of post and pre-salt hydrocarbon potential
- Lays the fabric for crustal understanding of the margin
- Data reveals new plays and tremendous potential in the margin and provides an excellent understanding of the basement architecture
