ION Completes Strategic Sale of ARIES II Land Seismic Systems

4/29/2009 7:17:00 AM

--Major International Land Contractor to Utilize ARAM Technology on High Channel Count Projects
HOUSTON, April 29, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ION Geophysical Corporation (NYSE: IO) today announced that its ARAM Systems subsidiary closed the first commercial sale of its cable-based ARIES II(TM) seismic recording platform to one of the world's largest geophysical services providers. The sale includes two 5,000-channel ARIES II recording systems that the customer plans to deploy on upcoming, high-channel count seismic surveys.

Chris Chamberlain, Senior Vice President of ION's Land Imaging Systems division, commented on the significance of the sale, "The purchaser of these ARIES systems has had a long-standing relationship with ARAM that pre-dates our acquisition by ION. We are excited that they continue to turn to us for their technology needs and look forward to collaborating with them as we further evolve the ARIES platform. As the industry demands more from seismic imaging technology, it is imperative that we work in tandem with our clients to design highly intuitive recording systems that exceed their expectations. For the first time ever, an ARIES-equipped seismic contractor will be able to see a 10,000-channel record in real-time, enabling them to optimize their productivity in the field. ARIES II is designed to deliver higher quality datasets, especially those requiring thousands of channels in dense, 3D acquisition programs."

ARIES II offers advanced vibroseis functionality, new central system capacity, 12Mbps data transmission, and a 24-bit system architecture. In addition to a fiber optic baseline, ARIES II systems utilize redesigned line-tap ground units to increase data transmission speed, support high channel capacity recording (up to 60,000 channels real-time at 2ms), and reduce overall system weight. The system is outfitted with the industry's only real-time, quality control (QC) application. Known as PatchView(TM), ARIES II QC software offers an intuitive computer display that provides comprehensive views of trace data for 10,000-plus channel spreads. PatchView provides both operators and observers with at-a-glance visual analyses of trace quality attributes including ambient noise, signal RMS, and signal-to-noise ratios, as well as ongoing shot-based QC-attribute displays that track hourly changes in data quality.
