19th Annual Technology Workshop
Event Recap

ION hosted the 19th annual Technology Workshop at the Sprowston Marriott Hotel, near Norwich in the UK, on 15-17 April 2008.

Sprowston 2008ION's technology workshop has grown steadily in popularity since it began in 1986 and has provided a venue for key regional and industry experts to debate topics relating to the industry's existing technological challenges. The outcome provides new insights into industry exploration issues and starts the development of solutions.

With outstanding technical papers and the participation of key experts representing a broad spectrum of the seismic industry, from oil & gas companies to seismic contractors and academia, the event has been instrumental in shaping aspects of the industry over the years.

This year the workshop was attended by 52 external delegates and 15 ION personnel. The event began with an evening Icebreaker on 15 April, followed by one and a half days of technical presentations.

As with past events the quality of technical papers was of the highest standard and the feedback from delegates was enthusiastic.

Peter Stewart, John Tinnin, Stuart Darling and Paul Brettwood presented papers and case studies on ION technologies. External papers were given by key staff from StatoilHydro, BP, Maersk Oil, Total, Octio, RXT, Woodside, ExxonMobil, ARKeX and Spectraseis. This year ION sponsored two academics from the University of British Columbia at Vancouver, Canada, continuing the links between ION and the academic world. Presentations featured a broad range of topics including Full-wave case studies from China, OBC technologies, a Wide-Azimuth case study from Algeria and passive seismic experiments.

Abstracts of all presentations and speakers bios can be obtained by request. Please click here for more details.

Sprowston 2008The highlight of the social programme was a trip to the Green Man pub where delegates relaxed and networked in the informal "English pub" atmosphere and listened to some great jazz.

Following the event, delegates were polled to gauge the value of their experience at the forum.

Overall, participants agreed that the forum met all their expectations and that they would definitely attend the event again and recommend it to their colleagues.  A sampling of comments from the attendees included:

"Another excellent event. Great networking opportunity. Good interactive discussion. ION should be commended for producing this event"

"Thank you once again for an excellent meeting. Best conference of the year for me."

"A very well organised workshop. Thanks for the invitation"
