ION Sponsored Middle East Technology Forum
February 4-6, 2008
Event Recap
Building on the success from previous years, METF4 was held at the Hilton AbuDhabi hotel. Over 65 senior executives from leading oil and gas companies, service contractors and academics attended the conference in the Middle East.
2008 was ION’s fourth year of collaborating with local E&P companies to produce a regional technology forum designed specifically for the Middle East and it further reinforced the company’s ongoing commitment to the region.
After an introduction from ION’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Peebler, stressing the imperative to move beyond traditional land acquisition practices, Giath Ajlani from ADNOC opened the technical sessions with his paper on “Unconventional Abu Dhabi 3D Seismic Land Acquisition Best Practices.” In his paper, Mr Ajlani highlighted many of the challenges of the region and the latest approaches to designing receiver arrays and source sweeps to ensure that high resolution seismic is available at the target depths. The design aspects of this paper were echoed and expanded upon by Aaron Pearson's “Full-wave Survey Design” paper which neatly dove-tailed in some FireFly examples.
One key feature of the METF is the open presentation of papers about research projects. In 2008, these included updates on the advances in Passive Seismic possibilities in the region. Dr Tariq Al-Khalifa also presented KACST’s (King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology) work on acquiring high-resolution seismic data to help characterize the near surface more accurately.
Other METF presentation topics included:
- Full-wave survey design and processing – Case study
- Seismic acquisition best practices in the UAE
- Fault mapping in Carbonates from an Oman case study
- Passive seismic experiments
- Regional studies from Iraq
- Processing advances

The opportunity for informal conversations and networking between delegates always plays a key part in ION’s conferences. At METF4, after a formal dinner, an Arabic Fusion Band from Lebanon played a mix of traditional based jazz with more local influenced tunes, allowing the delegates to relax and discuss the day’s events and presentations.
Following the METF4, delegates were polled to gauge the value of their experience at the forum. There was unanimous agreement that the overall value of the forum was excellent and that the event served as a frank, non-commercial platform for discussing current trends and next-generation seismic technologies.
Overall, delegates agreed that METF4 met all their expectations and that they would definitely attend the event again and recommend it to their colleagues. A sampling of comments from the attendees included:
“I was pleased to see that the event was focused on technologies and their application in real case studies.”
“The METF has showcased some ground-breaking work worthy of wide publication.”
